Outside Lands 2013
There’s a reason people make Outside Lands a tradition, no matter what’s going on in our lives. Thrown by Another Planet Entertainment, Outside Lands is a massive 3-day event for 180,000 people in San Francisco. When Another Planet Entertainment throws Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park, they truly take you to another planet. Golden Gate Park hosts a temporary micro-world with trees for walls, grass for floors, and a roof of clouds. It is a way of living that exists for 57 hours with its own culture, customs, rules, and regulations. It is truly a one-of-a kind experience and is an experience worth any Yolo or Sacramento County resident’s effort to attend.

Outside Lands 2013Let’s talk music. There are 6 stages – with one featuring stand-up comedy at the Barbary and another as a mini-rave dome sponsored by Heineken– and 87 acts at Outside Lands. The music is diverse across genres and relevant decades, providing something for everyone in the diverse crowd. Another Planet does a fantastic job splitting up acts across stages that will divide audiences and reduce crowding in any one area at a time. All of the bigger acts you may expect more people to see, such as Paul McCartney, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hall & Oates and Nine Inch Nails perform on the Lands End stage in the main Polo Fields area of the park with the most room to accommodate the largest crowds. Our favorites in addition to those listed above include Dillon Francis, Cherub, The Easy Leaves, and Zedd who performed at the smaller stages Panhandle, Sutro, and Twin Peaks respectively.

Those who attend concerts regularly know that security and greeting staff can make or break initial feelings of enjoyment. As for Outside Lands, the staff is friendly, understanding, and even humorous. Without ignoring actual safety concerns, they definitely work in the San Francisco spirit of we-won’t-bother-you-unless-we-have-to. The vibe all around is amazing and it’s probably due to the diverse crowd and relaxed environment at the festival. You will see young couples with infants wearing gigantic ear protectors at the back of a crowd, picnics on blankets, groups of friends of all sizes, families, your family, children barely old enough to be unsupervised, and hip elderly people. The fashion can be very weather appropriate, weather defiant, simple, eccentric, comfortable, and costume-y. The overall good feelings you will absorb in Golden Gate Park during Outside Lands are surely important to your ability to enjoy the music. It’s a simple equation for a great time.

outside-lands-7outside-lands-8Outside Lands is hands down worth the money, time, and effort. However, there will always be circumstances that prevent someone from attending a festival. If you can’t be there in person, an impressively great alternative is enjoying it from your computer screen at home through Ustream and Bulldog Digital Media’s free live event streaming experience. It allows you experience your favorite bands as they perform in real-time or catch the acts later over the internet. We hope we’ve been able to convey the magic of Outside Lands enough to convince anyone who’s never been to consider going and stir up the good memories of those that were able to attend. Treat yourself to the perfect weekend for relaxing, raging, laughing, and obsessing over some of the best music in the world in one of the greatest cities in the world. Outside Lands 2014 is likely to occur next year on the second week of August, so start saving…and planning. Outside Lands rounds up over 50 vendors to provide the best tastes of the Bay Area. Andalu is back again serving its Crispy Mac n Cheese paired with Tomato Vinaigrette, a festival go-er’s favorite. 4505 Meats’ Chimichurri Fries are layered with hot sauce, fresh Cilantro Chimichurri, and a light and refreshing Tzatziki Sauce. The Whole Beast’s Lamb Poutine was Outside Lands’ (and Outside Lambs) show stopper. Moist and flavorful braised lamb over a bed of fries had the festival go-er’s waiting for over half an hour!
